We are deeply saddened by the news of President Carter's passing. He was a genuine friend to Habitat for Humanity and an enduring symbol of selflessly helping others and communities to flourish. Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, became enthusiastic advocates for Habitat for Humanity after their initial volunteer work in 1984, strongly aligning with the organization's focus on constructing homes, communities, and hope.
Over the years, the Carters’ involvement has become symbolic of Habitat’s ethos of service, with the couple dedicating weeks of their time each year to working alongside volunteers and future homeowners. Their commitment helped draw global attention to the organization's mission, turning Habitat for Humanity into a worldwide movement. To date, the organization has helped build or repair over 1 million homes in more than 70 countries, including 20 homes built and countless repaired in Hancock County, lifting millions out of poverty by giving them the chance to build a better life through affordable housing.
President Carter’s work with Habitat was an expression of his lifelong belief in social justice and his desire to make a tangible difference. His legacy is deeply intertwined with Habitat for Humanity, where the values of compassion, community, and dignity continue to inspire volunteers and families worldwide.
