Habitat Happenings

There is a lot of exciting information we want to share with you regarding the impactful initiatives Habitat is carrying out in the community and we have so many people to thank!

Swing for Habitat:

The 21st edition of our Swing for Habitat Golf Tournament took place on June 21st. We were joined by 18 teams for a delightful day dedicated to backing affordable housing. We extend our gratitude to the corporate sponsors listed below for their continued support in making this event accessible to the community every year!

Blue Hill Home Build:

During June, we conducted the groundbreaking and land blessing ceremony for our Blue Hill residence. Skilled volunteers are currently building the house under the guidance of Jim Adams, a seasoned professional with years of experience in the construction industry. We appreciate the commitment and dedication of these individuals to this project. Thanks once again to Tradewinds Blue Hill Hannaford, Erik Parker and Matt Snell at Viking Lumber for their support! STAY TUNED FOR MORE UPDATES ON THIS BUILD!!

Repair Corps:

The Hancock County Repair Corps carried out several Aging in Place Housing Plus Repairs for elderly individuals throughout Hancock County. These repairs assist in reducing healthcare expenses, improving overall health, and alleviating the burden on our seniors.

With the support of a grant from the Maine Community Foundation and in collaboration with the Bucksport Bay Healthy Communities Coalition, we have extended our Aging in Place program from Bucksport to include Verona Island and Orland. We are currently in the process of securing funding to further expand across the entire county. The significant impact of this initiative on program participants is evident, enabling them to safely remain in their homes.

We were also fortunate to receive a generous donation that will support us in reaching our building objectives. Hammond Lumber in Town Hill kindly donated an impressive DeWalt Miter Saw to us, which proved to be extremely useful during our recent deck repair.

Volunteers are the Backbone!

To fulfill our crucial mission of offering safe and affordable housing options to financially disadvantaged Hancock County residents, we depend on the unwavering commitment of our dedicated volunteers. Stephen Krichels and Mike Guerette, showcased below, have generously contributed over 100 hours each since the beginning of May to carry out home repairs! The photos capture them widening a doorway for a disabled woman to make room for her new wheelchair. We extend our gratitude to Mike and Stephen!

Bucksport Bay Festival:

Our time at the Bucksport Bay Festival was fantastic as we engaged in conversations with people about how they can benefit from our Aging in Place program. This initiative is a joint effort with the Bucksport Bay Healthy Communities Coalition and the town of Bucksport. Additionally, we managed to spark the interest of potential future volunteers keen on learning construction skills. Thanks to volunteers Saxon, Stephen, Dan, Ruiz Family, Joe, Katie and Eddie for all your help staffing our booth!

Keep an eye out for further details on how you can join us in coming months, including corporate team building volunteer opportunities! Learn more here.
